Community Roots: Volunteer Profiles

Give today to help grow tomorrow

Strengthening Communities through Volunteering and Giving

At Home Federal, we understand that the strength of a community – or its roots – is directly tied to the individuals, organizations, and businesses that make up that community. Built off the mantra of “Give Today to Help Grow Tomorrow,” Community Roots was created to help strengthen communities through volunteering, charitable giving, and supporting each and every client and community member within the local areas we serve.

In this article, we have highlighted three of our Home Federal team members. Discover the organizations they volunteer for and why they are passionate about these causes.

VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATIONS: Winona Rotary Club Board, Winona State University Warrior Club, and Minnesota State College SE
HOW LONG HAVE YOU VOLUNTEERED FOR THEM: Fifteen Years in Rotary, two years in Warrior Club, and three years with Minnesota State College SE
WHAT YOU DO FOR THEM: With the Winona Rotary Club: Past President (twice), Chair of Community Gifts Fund, Co-chair of Ride the Ridges Fundraiser, and Co-Chair of Rotary Scholarship Committee - fifteen years. With Winona State University Warrior Club: Board Member & Event Volunteer - two years, and Finance Board Member - one year. With the Minnesota State College SE: Foundation Board Treasurer and Event Volunteer - three years.
WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS ORGANIZATION: Rotary is a 1.2 million-member organization worldwide that is all about "doing good" globally. I have been fortunate enough to attend three International Conferences with Rotary and had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world with incredible life stories and experiences. Our local club is very active community-wide and has an energy and willingness to get things done and make a difference. Volunteering in Winona has introduced me to a wide variety of both people and experiences that I may not have had if I hadn't volunteered. It has been both rewarding and fun.

Brooke Harmening

VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION: La Crescent Chamber of Commerce
HOW LONG HAVE YOU VOLUNTEERED FOR THEM: Five Years
WHAT YOU DO FOR THEM: As the board treasurer, member and volunteer, I help with events to strengthen and promote the La Crescent community, making it an even greater place to visit, work, and live. In 2018 I was part of the planning committee for the first annual Block Party on Main. We also coordinate a 5k in June, gather members for a summer steak fry, organize a craft show & flea market in September during Apple Fest, hold fun trivia nights at local establishments, and host Christmas in La Crescent with an annual holiday parade in December.
WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS ORGANIZATION: I enjoy being a part of the community and building relationships, it's fun to socialize and see people having a good time. I've made great memories & friends in the La Crescent community by being involved with the La Crescent Chamber.

VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION: Feed My Starving Children
HOW LONG HAVE YOU VOLUNTEERED FOR THEM: Two years
WHAT YOU DO FOR THEM: Volunteer to pack meals.
WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS ORGANIZATION: There are starving children in our world! 1 in 9 goes to bed hungry. It takes a few hours of your time. My family and I will be packing meals in March for my 8-year-old grandson's birthday! I'm so proud of him for caring about this organization. I would encourage anyone to give it a try! So rewarding!

It Takes a Village

We strongly believe that “it takes a village.” That’s why we encourage each of our employees to get out and volunteer their time, as well as support each and every one of our clients and community members in their quests to give back – whether it’s with their time or their money. If we can all work together and give a little more back every year, our communities will continue to thrive.
